The program services offer a wide range of services aimed to better the life of those people affected by epilepsy. Our services are offered face-to face, by telephone or by mail.
Who gives referrals to The Epilepsy Center?

Who is eligible for services?
- Adults with epilepsy and/or developmental disabilities
- Children with epilepsy
- The family of someone with epilepsy
- Community organizations, schools, business people and professionals from the 13 counties in need of services or information about epilepsy
What services do we offer?
Information and Referral Services
- Informational and educational material about epilepsy and related issues are available upon request
- Reference library with relevant brochures, books, videotapes, magazines available at the Epilepsy Center
- Referral assistance for individuals and families in locating additional community resources
Advocacy & Case Management Services
The Epilepsy Center works to support the rights of individuals impacted by epilepsy in areas such as:
- Finding affordable housing
- Finding and keeping employment
- Educational, Medical and Legal issues
We assess the needs of our clients; assist in planning and implementation of plans; coordinate services on their behalf and become their voice when necessary.
Prescription and Benefits Assistance
We link our clients to Patient Assistance Programs (PAP) offered by Pharmaceutical Pharmacies and assist them as necessary to apply for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
Emergency Medication Assistance
Limited loans can be provided for the purchasing of anticonvulsant medication in an emergency situation only. The payment is forwarded directly to the pharmacy.
Counseling Services
Counseling is offered to individuals and/or families and includes epilepsy education. Special care is taken to identify and help individuals to deal with problems of acceptance and adjustment to epilepsy.
Some of the common issues addressed in counseling sessions are:
- Self-esteem
- Anger management
- Stress management
- Depression and anxiety
- Employment counseling
- Improving social skills
- Improving communication
- Enhancing marital and family relationships
- Assertiveness
- Parenting the child with epilepsy-overprotection vs. neglect
- Living well with epilepsy
Support Groups
The Epilepsy Center of Northwest Ohio offers many Teen, Family and Individual Support Groups throughout our 13 county coverage area. Please call The Center at 419-867-5950 for more information on upcoming dates and locations.
Family Support Network
The center helps willing consumers to link with each other and provide mutual support on their own time, outside of the Epilepsy Center’s scheduled activities. It is particularly helpful in the case of a family with a newly diagnosed child with epilepsy.
Family Camp
Family Camp is a weekend of fun filled camping experience. Families impacted by epilepsy enjoy camping activities, epilepsy education and social events designed to increase understanding of epilepsy, improve social skills and develop self esteem in a warm and accepting environment.
Seizure Smart School (SSS)
SSS is an educational, age-appropriate program designed for all school children from Preschool to High School. A representative from the Epilepsy Center talks to the students about the myths and facts about epilepsy with the emphasis on acceptance.
Kids on the Block (KOB)
KOB is an epilepsy educational puppet show available for 3rd and 4th grade students. During the show, children learn what is epilepsy, what to do when someone has epilepsy and how to be a friend when the seizure is over. The KOB method of puppetry creates an atmosphere where children feel comfortable to interact with the puppets and to ask questions about the topic.
Living With Epilepsy seminars (LWE)
LWE is a series of quarterly seminars designed to provide clients in the community with relevant information that will enhance their lives. The presenters are specialists in their field who create an atmosphere conducive to communication with the audience. LWE takes place in the Epilepsy Center’s Conference Room.
The Resource Center (RC)
The Resource Center is located in suite 101, just down the hall from the Epilepsy Center. The RC includes a library of books, magazines, videos, and other media related to epilepsy. The material is available to be borrowed by the community. The RC also hosts a variety of scheduled activities such as support groups, Yoga classes, Bingo and Crafts for our clients.

Admissions Requirements for ICF/MR Homes
- Eligible for services through the Lucas County Board of MR/DD
- Must be 22 years or older
- Admission to the residence is determined through a waiting list that is maintained by the facility.
- Referrals generally come from the case-management departments of local Ohio County Boards of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.
Admission Procedure for Individual Options/Supported Living/Level One Services
- Must currently be enrolled on an Individual Options or Level One Waiver or receive Supported Living funding through the County Board of MR/DD.
- One of our management staff will meet with you and/or your team to determine what services are desired and how we can best meet your needs.
- Once we’ve had this initial interview, the information will be discussed by our admissions team for final review.
- Based on recommendation by your team and our admissions committee, we will establish a date to begin services.
Respite
The Epilepsy Center works to offer support to other community members by offering temporary services in our group home settings. Beds are available for both men and women at our Barbara Jean McDonagh and Jean Scott Furney homes. We offer a stable, homelike environment with 24 hour staffing and nursing services available. We request a minimum of 48 hours notice whenever possible; however emergency services may be available upon request.
Oversight
We are licensed and/or overseen by the Lucas and Wood County Boards of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, The Ohio Department of Health, and Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
